Ok..........so we ARE doing a blog assignment again. I guess it's just a different way of presenting what you've learnt. One could just type a few thousand word paper and get graded for it. Now, we're just using the blog as a means of recording our findings. Know what? I didn't even know anything about blogging before uni started and before I had to do my music assignment. Now, I know what it is and how to use it! That's one good thing that has come out of this project.
The question now is what research topic should I chose? What should I focus on? What genre of music should I base my analysis and research on? Sigh, that time has come once again to decide what I want to do. It's so difficult to get started as there is so much infomation, so many possibilities out there. But I know that once I set my heart and mind on something, I'll do it.
Well, since I've done songs from musicals last sem, I shall do something different this sem. I think I would like to analyse pop music. Being trained in western music, I must say that I've never really thought highly of pop music. To me, pop music is superficial. The harmonies are simple and predictable. Every piece starts and ends in a certain way. That's just the way it is. One can't really say much about the beautiful texture, or the interesting way instruments are treated in pop music, unlike music of the western tradition. Pop music seem to pale in comparison with western music in terms of mastery of music writing.
In my opinion, pop music is purely for entertainment. I didn't know there were so many things to discover about them. So, I've decided that I want to do something on pop music.

Hi Jean,
Thank you for your candour here. I'm not sure if, on deeper reflection, you would find blogging to "just a different way of presenting what you've learnt". Perhaps, you (and anyone else who has been agreeing with you) might like to think of what you have gained in this ICT-enabled learning journey that you would not have if it had been a more conventional mode of assignment.
Yea, I guess there is more to blogging than "just a different way of presenting what you've learnt".
Having just gone through a lecture on online learning and how it compares to face-2-face learning, I guess each comes with its own benefits and uses. I was surprised though, that much study and research has been put into these areas. It is certainly a refreshing way of learning, as I've never done this sort of thing before in my previous schooling years. Perhaps it is because of the unfamiliarity of the mode of learning that I'm not able to see what I've gained through the process. But certainly, I've learnt many things, whether consciously or unconsciously.
